The Varsity team started off the season on the right foot as they defeated Ashland by a score of 45-34. Westwood got off to a fast start opening up a 16-7 lead after the first quarter. The Ashland zone slowed down the Wolverine offense from there, but the Wolverine team defense remained strong and Westwood held a 24-14 lead at halftime. Junior Christina Bonfiglio was an early offensive spark and Senior Stephanie McClure was the Wolverines’ best outside threat in the opening half. Despite several Ashland surges led by Senior Sam Leone (17 points), the Wolverines maintained their lead and held on for a 45-34 victory. Junior Allie Morin led a balanced Wolverine scoring attack with 13 points, including three three-pointers. Senior captain Cailin Harrington (8 points, 6 rebounds) and Junior Carly Sugrue (5 points, 7 rebounds) led great defensive efforts on Ashland stars Leone and Meghan Russell. The Junior Varsity team also kicked off their season with a win, defeating the Clockers 43-28. The Wolverines took control of the game in the opening quarter and never looked back. It was encouraging start for Coach Hiltz’s young team consisting of five sophomores and six freshmen. Westwood played good team defense and was led offensively by sophomore Caroline Bean with 10 points, and freshmen Caitlin Curtin and Fiona McGowan, who scored eight points each. |
